Karachi ki Chai in Chicago

Chai, the way Karachi pours it. Till 2 AM.

What Makes Karachi ki Chai Different

Chai is not tea with milk in it. The tea, the milk, the sugar and the cardamom go into the pot together and cook, and they keep cooking until the colour turns and the whole thing thickens. That is the difference you taste. Steeped tea is thin and clear; chai is dense, sweet and aromatic, and it coats the cup.

That cup is what people mean when they ask for Karachi chai, and Karachi does it strong — not bitter, but unmistakably tea-forward under the milk, with cardamom running through it. It is a cup built for the street — fast, hot, restorative, drunk standing up as often as sitting down.

How We Serve It

Two sizes. The 6 oz cup is the one most people order, the size you have while you are waiting for food or on your way somewhere. The 8 oz is the one you order when you have decided to stay a while.

It comes out hot and it comes out fast. Chai is the single most-ordered thing on our counter, so there is always a pot going — you are rarely waiting on it.

Chai and a Samosa

The pairing is not a marketing invention, it is simply what people eat. Hot fried pastry against sweet milky tea is the standard Karachi afternoon, and we serve the two as a set — a cup with a samosa, aloo as standard, chicken or beef if you want it.

The other classic: anda paratha — egg-filled flaky paratha with a cup alongside. It is a breakfast in Karachi and it is a 1 AM meal on Devon Avenue. Both live on the Breakfast & Chai menu, and the bun kabab is a third route to the same place.

Why Chai Runs Late Here

Devon Avenue quiets down early. We do not — the kitchen runs to 2 AM every night, and chai is what the late hours are actually built around. Drivers coming off shift, families out after a wedding, students who want somewhere warm at midnight. There is a reason the last cup of the night is poured closer to 2 AM than to midnight. If you are out late, here is what else is open.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Karachi ki Chai?

Karachi ki Chai is a milky, cardamom-scented tea brewed strong rather than steeped weak. The tea, milk and sugar cook together over heat instead of being combined at the end, which is what gives it the colour and body people recognise straight away.

How is chai different from regular tea?

Regular tea is leaves steeped in hot water, with milk added afterwards if you want it. Chai is brewed as one thing — tea, milk, sugar and cardamom cooked together — so it comes out thicker, sweeter and far more aromatic.

What size chai do you serve?

Two sizes, 6 oz and 8 oz. The 6 oz is the everyday cup most regulars order; the 8 oz is for when you are settling in. Both are on the Breakfast & Chai menu.

What should I eat with chai?

A samosa is the classic pairing, and we serve the two together as a set. Anda paratha is the other standard — egg-filled paratha with a cup alongside. Both are on the Breakfast & Chai menu.

How late can I get chai?

Every night until 2 AM. Devon Avenue empties out well before then, and the chai keeps pouring — see what else is open late.
